I'm in the process of gathering photos for a showing of my band photography from the mid-nineties till now. The show will be at Grindcore House sometime in 2012. Eric Schauffele sent me some photos that I shot years ago of him and a bunch of dudes playing cards. When the package came in the mail, it brought back all those feelings of ordering a record or a zine. I was hoping there was a Brother's Keeper seven inch in there. But there wasn't. Sadly, on a recent windy day, Strummer's beloved hat blew away. We took it off at the park and it wasn't in the stroller when we got back home. The hat looked good on him and he loved wearing it. It still had a lot of years left in it. It will be sadly missed. And fondly remembered.

STRUMMER RAVEN IN HDR

I fumbled my way through a tutorial on HDR or High Dynamic Range Imaging. It's a technology that's been around awhile, I just never got into it. But I played around with this image of Strummer from this years Bread and Puppet Theater performance in Glover, VT. The original raw file didn't have a lot of wow going for it. So this effect combined with some high pass sharpening brought the picture back to life. It's kind of wild how Strummer kind of looks like an old man.

Another shoot for Philly Style that I did was of Jerry Blavat, the Geator with the Heater. He was great and a real genuine guy. I can see why everyone loves him. I had about 15 minutes to do the shot and got some great captures. Then I had Fai @ Loupe Digital do a little one two on the image the blow out the window. I'm stoked on it.

I've started shooting portraits for Philadelphia Style Magazine. The first one I shot was of Maria Papadakis, who is continuing the philanthropic endeavors of her father. We shot on a rooftop in Center City and initially I was using strobes but I eventually realized the daylight was so much more beautiful than the artificial lighting I was using. Can't beat the sun!

One day at Dickinson Square Park, some kids came up to Abby and I and wondered if we wanted to hear their band play. We said sure and sat down to listen. One of the kids eventually ended up singing songs I've never heard of into a microphone while the other three banged on buckets and coolers.

They then said their name was First Kids Rock.

Pretty cool.

GETTING INKED BY COURT LONG

Court Long is a rad dude who hails from the same town that I do, Carlisle. He's been doing tattoos for a number of years now, and is a artist and painter as well. He moved to Spain last year and has been doing a blog about that.

He comes home every now and again and inks out of the Norristown Tattoo Shop. So I stopped in and got a sweet little Minor Threat sheep riding a skateboard.

So, as the story goes, I got there at 5:30-ish for my 6 PM appointment. Well, the guy in front of me wasn't done yet. He hadn't even gotten started yet! His girlfriend was at the shop helping Court finish the 'pinup' that he was going to get. He was down the street getting drunk at a bar. All she kept saying saying was "No nipples, he's got kids!". When he got back to the shop, he said "Court, I need some Pantera...and I need it loud!". What a riot.

So these images are what I shot as I was waiting my turn.

NEVER GIVE IN!

This mix came out of the idea that I really disliked Jim Jarmusch's 'Coffee and Cigarettes for two reasons. One, it would've been way more interesting if say, Tom Waits and Iggy Pop had an ACTUAL conversation, instead of reading lines and playing parts. Two, I really wish I could watch a dialogue between Chuck D. and Nick Cave, the musician, not the artist. A conversation between Chuck D. and Nick Cave would be pretty damn entertaining, I think. Then hopefully after that conversation, they'd record an epic album together of effed up duets. And that's where this mix comes in. I've been haunted for years by the idea of putting Nick Cave over some Public Enemy. From that starting point, it veered off into a mix of rap and mid-nineties hardcore. The best hardcore. Anyway, this mix has some definite flaws, volume is out of whack at times and there's compression issues. But I'm seeing at least an 13% improvement over past mixes. Maybe not.

I photographed Brooke Dillon from Katacomb for the May Issue of Philadelphia Magazine. I've also shot four other portraits for the ongoing column 'On Me'. Hopefully we'll be doing this column forever, because it was a super fun chill experience. We shot at a studio in Philadelphia called The Power Plant. I'd recommend the space to anybody shooting anything really, from food to fashion. They have a lot of different light popping in that place and tons of sweet views. So go pick up a copy of the May issue right now!

PROJECT: DEAD ELECTRIC

This album is basically a compilation of songs I recorded under the title 'Dead Electric' from 2005 to 2010. They're all songs made solely with the GarageBand software. They were originally designed to be soundtracks to movies I intended to make, but never did. I eventually ran out of steam with the current set of sounds offered by GarageBand. I can't see making any more songs in this style, but you never know. If you have a use for one of these songs, let me know. It'd be nice to see what someone could do with them. Thanks.

I shot some images for Ruthless Animals, the collaboration between artists Ann Gaziano and Lauren Ruth. Their performance / installation entitled String (Figure) Theory was shown in Charleston in March, and will be shown in Philadelphia in Mid May, at Grizzly Grizzly. I photographed the artists doing cats cradle positions with crazy creepy nails. The photos were shown at the performance.

IT'S BEEN A WHILE...

So the last post I made was waaaaaay back on the 28th of May. Wow, almost a year. And it's gone by so fast. I have anywhere from one to three good reasons for the layoff. For one, on the 14th of July, 2010, we had our first son, Strummer Raven. So for a while there, I didn't have ANY time to post anything, even though I was shooting quite a lot of photos of him. Then we moved to the woods of Northeast Pennsylvania to work/live at Mildred's Lane and then we moved to Philadelphia at the start of 2011. We've just been getting settled in here, there's still some stuff in boxes, but we're starting to figure things out. Along the way I shot a wedding, shot some photos for Ghost Robot Ninja Bear's new CD, my step-father passed away, lost our dogs in a tragic fire at my mother's house, shot some really creepy fingernails, had some photos from Mildred's Lane printed in Food and Wine, got a tattoo of the Minor Threat sheep riding a skateboard, and started shooting a monthly portrait for Philadelphia Magazine. It's been a long and turbulent time. But now that we're settled in, I'll start posting more regularly. Promise.

NEW COFFEE SHOP IN GREENPOINT - MILK AND ROSES

My good friend Gabriel Velasquez of Five Inch Monsters and now Project Art Cart turned me on to a rad new coffee shop in Greenpoint called Milk and Roses. It's only been open a few weeks, but I have the feeling the shop is going to do well. It's run by a nice Italian man, so you know the cappuccinos and espressos are going to be amazing. And they are. And so are the cannolis. They have a nice menu of sandwiches, cheese, fruit and desserts. The inside of shop has a great look and feel, lot's of books and a piano, not to mention a nice backyard.

Lucky Dog is a new-ish bar in Williamsburg that I've totally fallen in love with. Mostly because on Sundays they have a sweet day of Honkey Tonk music and free bagels. Sometimes they have live bands, sometimes a DJ, but it's always all country. The bar has gotten good write ups in the Onion and The L Magazine. And did I forget to mention the beer selection?!?!?! It's aaaamazing! So anyways, if you're ever out and about and bored, stop in and have a beer.

So the last Thursday of every month they have live band karaoke at the Charleston in Williamsburg. The backing band is Infinity Spaceship, helmed by none other than Mr. Oscar Rodriguez, who plays in about 75 bands, but is most well known for shredding and singing in such bands as Nakatomi Plaza and Ghost Robot Ninja Bear. They know about 100 songs and they're first come, first serve. You sign up for a song and then make a fool of yourself. It's pretty much the best thing ever. Oscar Rodriguez is a the mega talented guitarist/songwriter/singer who formerly helmed Nakatomi Plaza. One of his many new projects is Ghost Robot Ninja Bear. If you dug Nakatomi you'll love GRNB, along the same lines, a little more singing, less screamy. A little Jawbox, a little ..And You Will Know Us..., and an awesome amount of harmonics. Definitely rocking.

Also, Oscar is a member of Infinity Starship, the sweet assed house band for the live band karaoke night at The Charleston. It happens the last Thursday night of every month and it's the best thing ever.

THE WHITE ROOM // BIG PRINTS IN A SMALL ROOM

The White Room is a new daylight studio/show space run by Pascal Prince, who is an amazing retoucher and printer that I've already posted about. With the possibility of Northlight 1111 Studio (which is in the same building) closing, this may be one of the last north facing daylight studios around. And the day rate is incredibly affordable. Also, Pascal is going to be doing shows of young up and coming photographers.

Big Prints In A Small Room

On Tuesday, March 30 2010 you are invited to see big prints in a small room, my working studio in New York City.

This event marks four simultaneous openings.

One:
I am showing my photos, images from the past and the present. What connects them is the gift of a moment that surprised me. I snap pictures mainly to experience a sort of “coup de foudre”, literally the roar of thunder associated with “love at first sight”. The six photographs I have blown up for the white room are on high quality archival pigment prints.

Two:
This is also the opening of my fine art printing studio where I do work with photographers to print their images as high end digital prints.

Three:
I am inaugurating a non-formal way of exhibiting “big prints in a small room” by different photographers. I will be doing this on a regular basis at “the white room”.

Four:
I am opening a small daylight studio “the white room” for photographers to work in and to be used as an exhibit space. It is a gem in the heart of New York City.

This opening will take place Tuesday, March 30 between 5:30 and 8 PM. The show will be up until April 14 with a schedule to be announced.

LA LOFTS

Last week, Lucy and I were out in LA. She was shooting food shots for an upcoming Disney/Muppets cooking show for kids, which sounds pretty fun. And she drug me along, willingly. We got to see some clips from the show and it looks like it's going to do well.

We shot at the LA Lofts in Hollywood, in loft II. It was a big space with lots of daylight with a helpful staff. We were unlucky enough to have super dark, rainy days. But we were able to get all our shots done and were really happy. And we got to work with Dani Fisher, one of our favorite people.

I've assisted on a few shoots at Some Studio and always found the place to be quite nice. Great light and quality staff. I know I've posted about the studio before, but this last time I had a chance to meet Evan Kafka, who runs the studio and is also a photographer. He shot the photos for the The Bridge Project's 'The Tempest', that you've seen all over the city. He's a top notch guy and there's a new deal at Some that I didn't really know about until recently. It's called the Someday Plan. Every tenth time you rent the studio is free! Free? Yep, free. Pretty sweet deal. Way better than getting a crappy sub after paying for and eating ten crappy subs. Perfect for us photographer/assistant types that are broke like Detroit.

I made my first mix the other night, inspired by the sights and sounds of my first trip to Hollywood. I made the mix in Garageband. Still learning the ins and outs. I burned the mix to a disc and threw it in the rental car and drove up on Mulholland, good times.

I had never seen or heard of rime ice before we woke up to it here in Vermont. After a little digging I learned it was actually soft rime as opposed to hard rime or hard rhyme.

I shot photos of Lucy, Michael and little Georgia for their Holiday cards. Luckily we got a warm December day and Georgia had just had a nap. They got them printed at Paper Culture. They have all different kinds of cool looking templates. I think they turned out great. It lost a little bit when I scanned it in.

For all those that still don't know, I'm a proud member of Who Dat Nation. And we've been having a pretty good season this year. I watch games at a nice little bar called Bar None in the East Village, with the fine men and women of the Krewe of Bar None. On a recent Sunday, I finally had a chance to bring my camera to the game and shot some pics. These are some of the better ones.

I met Adam one day when I needed an awesome man with a van. He filled both requirements. We've hung out a few times since then and realized that both of our first bands played on a compilation from like 15 years ago. Crazy stuff. So now he plays in La Otracina, a wild space ride of a band from here in Brooklyn. The other photos are of an installation of sorts on the dashboard of his sweet ass van.

I assisted Lucy shooting the Simply Mexican cookbook with Lourdes Castro. It came out in April but I totally dropped the ball in mentioning it sooner. It was a sweet and savory three days working with Lourdes and learning ways to cook Mexican simply. I even got an old school shout out in the book. Congrats to Lourdes on the book, and to Lucy for the great photos.

ONE MINUTE FILM FEST 7 - 2009

This years one minute film fest hosted by Jason Simon and Moyra Davey was interrupted by rain. But other than that it was a good time. And there were a lot of great films. Unfortunately, my film didn't air due to technical difficulties (stupid iDVD), so I wanted to put it up to show everyone that I did make one. I don't think I'll bring it to next years' fest just because it has meaning now and it was one minute in time in the Summer of 2009. Hopefully I won't feel that same way come Summer of 2010.

I included a few photos I shot during the festivities, including Mark manning the Martini station, as he always does. And I managed to capture one half way decent shot of the the barn, a film and lightning all in the same exposure. But not too well.

Hopefully whatever film I do next year will actually make it to the fest.

My roommate, Christina is part of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). She was out of town this week, so I went to pick it up. They wanted to give me more than this but I was riding my bike, so I went light. I've already fried up the squash, onions and zucchini, if that is a zucchini. And I got a kohlrabi, which I have to figure out what to do with.

And, if you don't know about Cafe Caribe, it's the best coffee you're ever going to get for 3 for $5. That's right. 3 cans or 3 bricks for $5. Gotta love it. Awesome coffee in an awesome container.

On Monday I assisted Gemma Comas on a shoot at Go Studios. It was the first time I had ever been there. The studio was real nice, new kitchen, great light, and an awesome staff that was there to take care of all of our issues. They have equipment to rent if you ever need it. I didn't know what Mammatus clouds were until I saw one and then got on the old Wikipedia and learned a little bit. Pretty interesting stuff. This shot was the last of the night, a few seconds later and the show was over. Pretty wild.

FORT GREENE FLEA MARKET

This is the first time I've been to the Fort Greene flea market and it rocked out. A lot of cool art and used/vintage things. Everything from found photos to Spongebob watches. And they have these crazy good quesadillas with spinach and mushrooms! And lemonade! MJ was playing on the turntable a lot. Watching little kids dance to that was kind of weird. But awesome.
